yes morass...i think u r right....cam across this topic....Developing a Real-Time Wireless Data Acquisition System to Monitor Bridge Health in India....

They have used the following in their system:

"We used LabVIEW and LabVIEW Real-Time software as well as PXI hardware to build the real-time wireless data acquisition system. We acquire the strain signals using the NI SCXI-1520 universal strain gage module, voltage signals using the NI PXI-6225 multifunction data acquisition module, and other signals using the NI PXI-8422/4 serial port extender. The GSM/RF/PSTN lines transmit the acquired signal to the remote control station to complete real-time monitoring.

The centrally located PC controls two remote PXI systems connected through a wireless network. The PXI systems are programmed to acquire data from sensors at a user-specified sampling rate and log the data. The systems automatically switch to higher maximum logging rates during emergency situations using LabVIEW Real-Time. The user can specify any emergency condition such as cyclones, earthquakes, or any major distortion in the structure.

The systems use LabVIEW Real-Time to generate and transmit SMS alerts to the control PC through GSM, RF, or PSTN communication for display and post data acquisition analysis. For each PXI system, we connected the GSM and PSTN modem through the PXI-8422/4 RS232 ports and interfaced the RF modem to the PXI system through the RJ45 port in an NI PXI-8186 controller to transmit data from the field to the remote control station. The control station compares data from the two independent PXI systems on different bridges and displays the report accordingly."
